A 13 member NCAA committee led by Drake University’s Frank Gardner will review results of a confidential survey from 501 member institutions. The goal is to assess current recruiting and financial aid practices and consider new legislation to address possible abuses.
Waverly and Charles City tied with four players each on the first team. New Hampton placed three, Decorah and Oelwein had multiple selections with second team honors for Tom Fick and others. Honorable mention lists include players from Cedar Falls Cresco Decorah and Oelwein across positions.
Mississippi rises to No. 2 in the AP poll after a win over LSU while Southern California remains No. 2 in the UPI poll as undefeated leader. Iowa moves to 14th in the UPI list following a 16 to 7 victory over Ohio State. Iowa and the Hawks stay at No. 16 in the AP rankings.
Mt Vernon hosts Cedar Rapids Prairie in the season opener as Coach Andy Boulton debuts with four lettermen and two transfers on a 21 man squad. The team features seniors Larry Prachar Jim Koch and juniors Henry Lefebvre Lyle Svoboda. Prairie travels to Monticello next Tuesday and doesn’t play a home game until December 15 against Tama.
Ross Bill Jones is named head basketball coach at Keokuk high school succeeding Don Shupe who moves to Cedar Rapids Washington. A 1933 Keokuk graduate, Jones comes from Warsaw Illinois where he coached nine years and produced conference champions. He is a Western Illinois University graduate.
New York AP reports Red Schoendienst declares he will win back his old second base job with the Milwaukee Braves and hold it for years. He says he is fully recovered from tuberculosis and in good health for a strong 1960 season. He has been named honorary chairman of the National Tuberculosis Association to aid the 1959 Christmas Seal drive. The Braves’ search for a durable replacement at second base continues after his illness.
In the Buchanan county conference race for 1959-60, Lamont and Rowley loom as top contenders with experienced rosters. Lamont returns 5 lettermen and six-footers Brunkhurst and Decker, plus Stef fen Estling and Bowden, while Rowley fields veteran boys and girls units led by Peterson Haines and McGrath on the boys side and Morrissey Zieser Kantz Fox Switzer Gates on the girls. Brandon, Quasqueton, Hazleton, and St John’s of Independence also field seasoned lines as rebuilding seasons approach.
Wisconsin coach Milt Bruhn dismissed reports he is leaving for Minnesota stating he has a job to do at Wisconsin. He said he has not been approached for any new job and remains focused on the Badgers in his fourth season.
