Father Receives $20,000 Judgment For Son's Death
Federal Judge Edward J. Mc Manus awarded $20,000 to John R. Gill and his wife for the death of their son John S. Gill, 18, who was crushed between two boxcars in Milwaukee yards on June 28 1968 while serving as a night shift foreman on a switching crew. The award reduced from $30,000 after finding the decedent was one third contributorily negligent for running from a zone of safety into a zone of peril. The suit claimed negligent yard lighting and dangerous running switches and improper job assignment without training. Gill died attempting a running switch known as a highball when he leaped from a freight car as two cars collided on adjacent tracks. The railroad was found negligent in not moving a car left in a position that allowed the moving car to collide with it. The trial noted his attendance at a safety meeting and three student trips prior to the accident.

Squirrel Hit By Gun Butt Injures Teen Hunter
