In New York the Soviet spy Col Rudolph Abel, the highest ranking busted in the U S, was given 30 years in prison and a $3,000 fine. He faced possible death but received concurrent sentences on three counts with no separate term.
The Federal Reserve Board cut the discount rate from 3 to 3 percent in Atlanta New York Richmond and St Louis signaling easing of tight money amid a two year boom. Officials say inflation is not the dominant factor though recession remains possible. Banks can borrow more to fund loans as Christmas demand rises and refinancing costs may drop.
The weather bureau warned of cold rain in Iowa with a chance of snow Saturday in the extreme northwest. Two elderly Marion men died when their car left gravel Highway 94 and overturned into a creek bed near Marion. George Lincoln Wood 73 and Clarence Harlan Taylor 70 were thrown from the vehicle. both died at the scene. Funeral services are planned for Wood Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and Taylor Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Marion.
