Linn county grand jurors warned Cedar Rapids railroads to fix Fourth street obstructions by January 1948. They reported at a city railroad conference that promises had been made, urging action at the January term and pledging to monitor progress to avoid past inaction.
A sloppy wet snow covered most of Iowa Friday night into Saturday bringing hazardous driving conditions. Thirty towns lost telephone service as lines and poles snapped, with 340 long distance lines and 40 to 50 circuits affected. Damage estimates ranged from 50 000 to 75 000 dollars. Cedar Rapids reported 3.5 inches, Marshalltown six, Audubon five, Fort Dodge and Mason City four or five inches. State highways remained open but icy conditions warned. No fatalities, minor crashes reported. Mechanicsville woman injured in a skid.
Dr James E McLoone a 54 year old La Crosse physician was shot to death after visiting St Josephs Home for the Aged and his automobile a 1938 Buick was found two blocks from the last call. Authorities in four states pursued a stolen car and blocked highways as investigators sought motive and suspects. He left behind $110 and his wallet and was father of five.
Eddie Anderson Iowa football coach faces the athletic board Monday evening at the Jefferson hotel in Iowa City to consider resignation after a terse Friday night and early Saturday public announcement. President Virgil Hancher, Athletic Director Paul Brechler, and board members announced the action as Iowa’s six and five losses, plus a Wisconsin blowout, weighed on the decision.

WATERLOO AP Search for two men continued after they pulled a gun on Sheriff Amery Hart at Independence and fled from his office. A car stolen Nov 12 at Elgin was found Friday night and brought to the Waterloo station. blood was in the car. One man was named Gerald Dean Olson of Union Illinois, the other Dick Gordon. Olson’s mother asked that the pair be held as they were wanted by Illinois authorities. Hart recounted the escape when he confronted Olson in the office and began a search before Olson produced a weapon.
Mrs Golda Vanston, a former Pleasant Prairie teacher, attempted suicide after her husband Orville Vanston, charged with assault with intent to murder, pleaded not guilty at arraignment. Detectives found her unconscious with gas jets on and later she recovered. she had left a note for her son Richard.
In Bombay twenty five ships were immobilized as a strike by about 30,000 dock workers halted port activity on Saturday. The stoppage affected loading and unloading operations across the harbor, signaling broad disruption in maritime commerce.

James Lilly told authorities his dog fired his automatic shotgun during a hunting trip in Hinton. Lilly said a bullet entered his foot as he stooped to pick up a quail. the dog stepped on the trigger, causing the discharge.
