Towans face rising Alzheimer's disease as the fifth leading cause of death in Iowa, surpassing accidental injuries. Experts say aging baby boomers and better diagnosis drive the increase, with less stigma aiding reporting.
Iowa Department of Public Health graphic lists the top death causes for 2008. Heart disease leads with 7,268 deaths, followed by cancer at 6,386 and chronic lower respiratory disease at 1,829. Other listed causes include cerebrovascular disease, Alzheimer's, unintentional injuries, influenza/pneumonia, diabetes, infectious diseases, and deaths by self harm.

Iowa parents again chose Emma as the most popular girl’s name, a position held for six of seven years after Ava’s 2007 edge. Ethan remained the top boy name for the fourth straight year in the latest state vital statistics report. Suzanne Horak of Washington Iowa notes the name’s enduring appeal.
The Iowa list highlights Emma as the top girl name with 255 births followed by Olivia, Ava, Addison, Abigail, Ella, Chloe, Grace, Madison, and Sophia. For boys, Ethan leads with 238 births, then William, Carter, Jackson, Logan, Jacob, Noah, Gavin, Landon, and Mason. The report lists Emma, Isabella, Emily, Madison, Ava, Olivia, Sophia, Abigail, Elizabeth, and Chloe for girls, and Jacob, Michael, Ethan, Joshua, Daniel, Alexander, Anthony, William, Christopher, and Matthew for boys. The Gazette reports how rural churches face dwindling attendance and fewer pastors. Rev. James Davis sees 40 to 50 on busy Sundays yet only four or five during other services. Across the country mobile society draws worshippers to cities, worsening rural church closures. The United Methodist church in Ohio Iowa Davis serves hosts small congregations and the Fund for Theological Education notes ongoing declines.
In Iowa rural counties five United Methodist churches share a single pastor, Davis, serving Poweshiek with about a hundred congregants. Nationally under half of rural churches have full time pastors, while in the Midwest only about 20 percent do. The story notes sparse church leadership in the region.
