Hijack of Plane with 82 Aboard
An Eastern Airlines jet carrying 78 passengers and four crew was hijacked 20 minutes after takeoff from Raleigh Durham en route to Atlanta. The crew diverted to Jacksonville before flying to Havana Cuba. Captain Thomas Mayberry reported the hijack at 9 31 a m and landed at Jacksonville at 10 22 a m. The flight crew based in Atlanta included James King Bonnie Culp and Diane Tiedge. No weapon count or hijacker number was released. Authorities noted lack of on board law enforcement and surveillance gaps at Richmond and Raleigh Durham. Sky marshals were not aboard domestic flights.

Nine Killed In Combat In Vietnam
In Vietnam on Thursday nine Americans were killed and 12 wounded after a mine, booby trap, and attack on a patrol. The Americal division suffered heavy losses in Quang Ngai province with a mine blowing up a truck, killing six and wounding four. Two American infantrymen died and two were wounded in another Quang Ngai incident. Officials note at least 15 percent of U.S. casualties in Indo China from mines and booby traps. In parallel, North Vietnamese forces killed one American and wounded six in a patrol northeast of Saigon, while ambushing a South Vietnamese convoy on the highway northwest of Saigon, killing two and wounding one. Cambodia reports indicate government casualties as well.
