Partly cloudy and cooler conditions expected Monday night with showers and a turn to colder conditions Tuesday. Lows 35 to 40 west and 40 to 45 east Monday night. highs 45 to 50 with 50 to 55 east. Northwest winds 20 to 30 mph. No significant precipitation beyond a few showers anticipated.
Dr. H. T. Mazumdar, former Gandhi associate, told Coe college YMC A and YWCA members in Bryant Memorial room that peace is not a fixed date achievement but a mass effort. He cited indifference and excessive nationalism as key causes of conflict and urged nations to think beyond borders and pursue common ideals. He praised the Cedar Rapids Conference on World Questions for stimulating debate on world unrest.
Loren Coolahan, 42, who rented a room at 523 Sixth Avenue SE, was treated for a cut mouth and stomach injuries after a scuffle with his landlord Herb Brown. Brown and his wife were jailed for drunkenness after the incident. Coolahan was transported to Mercy hospital then moved to St Luke’s.
The Davis cleaner at 1050 Mt. Vernon road SE reported a weekend break in with more than $100 in cash and items missing. Detectives said entry was gained by prying a rear window and the burglars left through a rear basement door left open Monday. Missing were $94 from the cash register, a $30 overcoat and a $10 table radio. The shop was discovered by manager Gerald Catt at 7:35 am Monday after being locked at 9:30 pm Saturday.
Dr. Vernon E. Lichtenstein English professor at Coe college was elected president of the Iowa State Conference of the AAUP at the annual Grinnell college meeting. He succeeds Dr. Ralph Ellsworth of the University of Iowa. Coe attendees included Prof. Richard C. Spencer and Prof. Signi Falk.

The United States promoted its envoy to Austria from minister to ambassador in a move backing the anti Communist Austrian regime. Cairo AP dispatch reports dock workers at the Mediterranean port of Alexandria walked out in protest of loading a British freighter bound for Bombay. Customs Director Mahmoud Said Bey urged a return to work noting the strike exceeded government boycott calls and blocked freight much needed by Egypt.

A 17 year old Cedar Rapids youth is arrested for stealing a suit, later turned to juvenile authorities. Rev Marvin B Kober of St Pauls Methodist Church is named to a joint committee of education officials by the Methodist Conference in Grand Rapids.
Secretary of Defense Lovett departed Monday for Europe to inspect military sites and participate in the Atlantic Treaty Council meeting in Rome, outlining a strong U S commitment ahead of alliance discussions.
Milwaukee report notes Senator McCarthy replies to former Senator Tydings calling him a clever little faker. McCarthy denounces the Maryland senator for whitewashing with the state department dispute over 284 employees deemed unfit and the 205 kept on. He vows the fight against Communists will continue despite Tydings' taunts.
Ashland Daily Press editor John B. Chapple volunteered Monday to argue the affirmative on McCarthy’s services. The Milwaukee Women’s Service club canceled the Nov 26 debate after failing to find an affirmative speaker. Henry Reuss was set for the negative side as he pursued the Democratic U S senate bid.
Washington reports the Air Force will not pursue purchasing 1.5 million pairs of dress gloves. Sen. Johnson of Texas, chair of the preparedness subcommittee, released Finletter’s letter stating the service will use army-type white cotton gloves for formal escorts and military police.
The Goddess of Liberty in New York harbor was dedicated by Grover Cleveland on October 28 to commemorate American independence. The National Geographic Society notes the statue was a birthday gift from France to the United States.
Cuthbert William Smith 407 Sixteenth Street SE Cedar Rapids time keeper clerk at Wilson and Company for 30 years died at his home after a brief illness. Born July 13 1889 in Wolverhampton England he came to the U S at 26 and married Eveline E. Bryant July 14 1915 in Vancouver BC. Survived by his wife Mt Hermon lodge No 263 member services set for 1:30 p m Wednesday in Turner chapel with Mt Hermon lodge Masonic burial at Oak Hill cemetery. Glenn M. Bassett died suddenly of a heart attack at his Springville home at 1 45 a m Sunday twelve hours before services were held for his mother Mrs Oscar Bassett in Cedar Rapids. Born February 24 1906 in Cedar Rapids he lived most of his life in the Springville area. He worked 25 years for Linn County road maintenance. Survived by wife former Bessie Mitchell three children Allen of Marion Marjorie and Thomas at home a granddaughter brother Leonard Bassett and sister Jee Neola Cejp of Cedar Rapids. Services set for 130 p m Tuesday at the Presbyterian church Springville burial in Springville Cemetery. Friends may call Hunt Funeral Home Springville.

Frank D Bellon a lifelong Fairfax area resident and farmer died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 11 05 am Monday after a short illness He was born June 28 1879 near Fairfax and married Leona Bellon on February 27 1924 at Marion Surviving are his wife a son Howard Bellon Cedar Rapids a sister Miss Jennie Bellon and two grandchildren He was a member of the Methodist church Fidelitas lodge A F and A M Iowa Consistory and El Kahir Shrine Friends may call at Turner chapel after 1 pm Tuesday
Elia Beenk Bubeck a Cedar Rapids resident for most of her life died at 4 15 am Sunday in a Detroit hospital. She taught in Cedar Rapids public schools and is survived by her son Blaine two sisters Florence Beenk and Lillian Beane and brother Herbert Beene. Her husband George died in 1940 and a daughter Mary Lou died in 1936. The Brady mortuary will hold services Thursday at 2 30 pm with Rev Theodore G Lilley First Presbyterian church. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. Friends may call after 5 pm Wednesday at the mortuary.

Moir told police he killed his wife after a quarrel in Waterloo then hid the body in the car trunk. The couple drove to Cedar Rapids where the dead woman was found after a post mortem showed hemorrhage and skull fractures. Police recovered a waitress uniform, clothing, the purse, and a near full pint of whiskey from the car.

In Kyoto four hundred Communist university students surrounded Emperor Hirohito’s car as police clashed with protesters. The event marked his first personal confrontation with Communist hostility during extensive postwar travels. Organizers chanted and waved placards opposing the imperial system, delaying the emperor for about 15 minutes at Kyoto University.
