The network seems eager to go with a weekly version of the tale based on the character from •The Carpetbaggers" (and subsequently the “Nevada Smith" film, starring Steve* McQueen) and has already signed Ferric Greene to the cast They’ve also assigned “( arpetbaggers" producer Marty Kackin the* job of chief executive on the project (in what will serve as his first TV production) and arc* paying top dollar for a script by John Michael Hayes, author of the screenplays for both motion picture versions of the story Production gets underway in Durango, Mexico, in January — and Potts r an hardly wait It represents a big break for a man who’s been waiting a long time for stardom — who came this close to it once w hen he was signed as lead of Paramount s “Izive Story” only to be dropped in favor of Ryan O’Neal.
