Christian M. Ravndal of Decorah Indiana former American ambassador to Uruguay was sworn in as the new United States minister to Communist Hungary. He succeeds Nathanial P. Davis who retires after more than 30 years in the foreign service. Ravndal 52 took the oath from John F. Simmons and plans to depart for Budapest January 3 with wife and daughter.
Forty representatives from fourteen schools attended the annual meeting of the College and University Teachers of History held Saturday at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. At the business session, it was decided to hold next year’s gathering at Luther College in Decorah with Prof. C. N. Evanson as chair.
The Salary Stabilization Board told employers that they may pay Christmas and year end bonuses to executives and administrative employees if these bonuses were paid in the previous year.
Saturday attorneys for both sides prepared briefs in an injunction suit against Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric by six Cedar Rapids residents. A final brief was due November 18. The residents seek a permanent injunction to stop the company from cutting their space heating supply, while the company cites a gas shortage in Cedar Rapids.
Three of six Linn county grand jury indictments were made public on Friday naming Robert A. Martin for bigamy Mike James Flynn for seduction and Leo D. McNamara for arson. All three men already in custody or held at Linn county jail after posting bond.

William H Goodrow executor without bond. Frank Pohorsky's will leaves fifty dollars to Otto Slapnicka sr and the rest to the Czech Orphanage and Old People's Home of Chicago. George Novak named executor without bond.
One woman pled innocent and four men pled guilty to criminal charges Friday and Saturday. Helen Edith Lotts pled innocent and her case was continued to the November term. Wayne Patten pled guilty to larceny and received a four month suspended sentence. Cleave Staples, 28, also charged with larceny, pled guilty and got four months in county jail starting July 26. Charles Jackson, 30, pled guilty to assault with intent to inflict great bodily injury and received six months. Errol N. Coleman pled guilty to stealing 24 used car batteries from Kushner Company on Nov 2 and got a six month suspended sentence.
Edward Kopecky asked for a new trial in a suit by his brother John Kopecky as administrator of Kathryn Kopecky estate. John was awarded $6,288.63 for rent allegedly owed. Edward claims new evidence warrants retry of the case.
The father of six year old Cheryl L Hewitt was awarded 639.50 for injuries her car collision on September 16 1950 in the 2000 block on J street SW caused. Leo Stolba confessed judgment for 450 in damages and 189.50 for expenses, with suit filed and disposed of the same day.
Eugene Blazek twenty of Cedar Rapids was taken to the men s reformatory at Anamosa to start a term not to exceed ten years. The court revoked a suspension on the sentence after Blazek pleaded to a breaking and entering charge on January 7, 1949. He had been accepted earlier but the suspension was lifted Friday after showing he had some merchandise.

Des Moines police reported finding the car of missing witness Earl Britt in a downtown Savery hotel garage amid the poison powder case. Britt vanished from his home after the alleged plot surfaced during a strike by restaurant and hotel workers union. An employee allegedly told hotel managers that people tried to have him place the powder in hotel sugar bowls.
Linn county reports defense bond sales reach $976,648, 103.25 percent of the $945,920 goal, county chairman A. O. Ambroz said. Fourteen other counties exceed their quotas as statewide totals for Series E F and G bonds top $16,348,077 with about a week left in the drive.
Mrs. Joe Dash aged 99 died at 12 30 p m Saturday at her home 1722 Fourth avenue SE She was born in Haugesund Norway and emigrated to the United States at 16 She married Joe Dash in 1878 and moved from Newhall to Cedar Rapids in 1929 Surviving are two daughters Mrs Calvin Williams and Mrs Josephine Thompson eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren Funeral arrangements are pending at Turner mortuary
Alvin Reno Joyce 69 of 710 Eighth street SE Cedar Rapids died Friday after two years of illness. Born in Minneapolis he lived most of his life here. A YMCA physical department janitor since 1920 he belonged to Mt Zion Baptist church and held A F and A M high offices. Survived by wife Anna a daughter Dorothy Ann Blakey and one grandchild. Services 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mt Zion Baptist church Rev Percy Burt. Burial Oak Hill cemetery. Rice funeral home open after 2 p.m. Sunday.
Mrs. Josephine Smatlan, 77, of 1629 Thirteenth Avenue SE Cedar Rapids resident 33 years, died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 1 a.m. Saturday after a brief illness. Born in Teleci Czechoslovakia she was a member of Prokop Velky ZCBJ. Survived by her son Joseph Cedar Rapids and three grandchildren. Services 3:30 p.m. Monday at Barta Hesser chapel conducted by Rev Zdenek F Pauk Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church. Burial Bohemian National Cemetery. Friends may call chapel after 4 p.m. Sunday.
Mrs. Oscar Bassett of 856 Fifth Avenue SE died Friday. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the First Congregational church in Cedar Rapids, with visiting hours at the Hunte funeral home in Springville.
The Iowa State Policemen's Association decided in Des Moines to fund a program sending underprivileged Iowa children to summer camps. Capt. Fred Carstens of Cedar Rapids chairs the youth aid program and said the initiative will be financed by revenue from the association's official publication and will start next summer.
City street department crews used mild weather to repair cracks in 1950 paving on First avenue East and West. Hot tar was poured Friday and Saturday to stop water seepage and freezing damage, Public Improvements Commissioner W. W. Stolba said. The repairs will continue along the full length of the avenue.

A midmorning short circuit in Mercy hospital elevator cables brought three hose and two ladder trucks to the scene. Smoke filled the shaft inside the main entrance but no fire occurred. Firefighters forced open the shaft door to reach the car with safety catches preventing access when not on the level. Marion youth Donald Harold Happel, 18, pleaded guilty to speeding 50 mph near Van Buren school in Cedar Rapids. Judge William J. Matias imposed a $50 fine and costs and recommended a six month license suspension after noting prior speed violations. Officer McDermott cited Second Street SW location.
Two Cedar Rapids men John Morrisey and John Goemaat were jailed after an elderly man claimed he was robbed of 15 dollars outside a city tavern Thursday night. They waived to the grand jury when arraigned before Justice Miles Adams. Bail was set at 1500 dollars each.
