Jack Scudder of Cedar Rapids was held up by three people in a green sedan near Spencer's Grove filling station west of Walker. They stole 170 dollars at gunpoint and fled west toward Independence after ordering him not to pursue. The incident was reported to the sheriff.

President Hoover spoke to reporters after the election returns, saying he would retire from public life after March 4 and likely return to California. He noted President-elect Roosevelt acknowledged his defeat and pledged to assist in a smooth transition.

In Linn County Iowa a Democratic tide partially swept the line but Republicans held key offices. Sheriff Joseph A. Petrus won 18 304 votes to James H. Smith 17 568 and carried Cedar Rapids west side and rural precincts. Third District Supervisor Fred Stirm won 2 701 to 1 704. Frank L. Wilane won county treasurer with 20 028 votes over Joseph J. Fiala. Edwin W. Lundquist edged Frank Healy 19 298 to 19 ? Healy also carried precincts for clerk. The county attorney post went to G K Thompson 19 258 over Wayne Boland 15 691.
AP tally through 7 pm CST shows Roosevelt leading with 17,248,872 votes to Meeker's 12,588,341 across 87,379 precincts of 119,714 nationwide. Drys warn of fight as Roosevelt and Democrats secure large victories in Congress and most governorships.
