Iowa Subsoil Moisture at 20-Year Low
Iowa State University released its fall subsoil moisture report showing the state at its driest in 20 years. Two thirds of Iowa may start next year with below normal soil moisture, with only 15 counties above five inches as of Nov 1. southeastern and south central counties have best prospects while west central and northwest show near zero. Projections suggest modest gains by spring but overall fair to poor crop prospects statewide.

Benton County 4H Award Winners Told
Benton County 4H members earned honors for project work this year as Don King announced. Twenty members were chosen for National 4H Congress in Chicago this Thanksgiving. Winners include Cindy Konicek Sherry Smith both Keystone Denise Baldwin Atkins and Della Krug Atkins. Additional recipients earned Benton Bank awards including Kathy Paulsen Robin Boddicker Sherry Smith Mary Parr Paul Bierschenk and Della Krug. Leadership awards went to Dan Paulsen Denise Duncalf Dean Bierschenk and Ron Moore. Other awards recognized Citizenship Lee Inman Peg Walker Fred Wright and Della Krug as well as I Dare You recipients Janelle Werning Kendall Werning and a scholarship for Mark Bierschenk. About 64 4H members received project awards with agriculture winners Susan Wittmer Vinton Keef Laurie Freese Van Horne Theresa Brecht Marengo and county champions John Schulte Norway dairy, Bob Wittmer Vinton, Sherry Wern ing Newhall, David Bierschenk and Paul Hagen Van Horne.

In Greenfield AP report, workmen drilled holes in three new grain silos to remove stored corn after a fourth 100 foot silo collapsed Saturday, scattering about 70 000 bushels of corn. Smiths to Receive Rex Conn Fair Award at All-Iowa
Judy and Neal Smith of Stanwood will accept the Rex Conn memorial award for the second consecutive year at the All Iowa fair board meeting in Cedar Rapids.
