Three Hunters Shot as Pheasant Season Opens
The pheasant season opened at 8 a.m. Saturday and by noon three hunters were at St. Luke's hospital with gunshot wounds. Richard L. Roberts, 33, Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, was seriously injured in a crossfire between two hunting parties near Urbana. A Kentucky party of six was in a nearby cornfield, and officials said the crossfire was accidental with no charges expected. Another hunter, Gary Riley, 21, of Lisbon, was treated for shotgun injuries to face and chest. Joseph Roman Jr. and Arthur Green were also involved in separate incidents as the day unfolded.
