Newton AP reports Maytag Company shows total sales of 60,536,282 for the period ending Sept 30 versus 59,871,259 last year. Net income falls to 2.24 a share from 4.25 as earnings decline despite rising sales.
New York AP report recounts pipe lore linking pipe smoking to lower crime rates. Morris Levinson notes surveys show few pipe smokers convicted of felonies and cites England’s high pipe usage with low crime. He links leisure time to pipe use and discusses briar and meerschaum pipe materials, taxes, and craft details.
Vishinsky attacks the United States accusing it of wartime hysteria and economic chaos due to armament buildup. The state health report urged cleanup or closure of the Hennessey Brothers dump, with the city pledging corrective steps and cooperation.
Cedar Rapids city council gave final passage to an ordinance allowing milk dispensing machines for public use after third reading. The meeting also approved a zoning code amendment rezoning about 200 acres south of Blair's Ferry road and east of Center Point road from residential to commercial, with a 300 foot west strip included.
Lewis Fulton a 40 year old Savery hotel waiter was jailed for refusing to answer questions in a Polk county attorney probe. Judge Murrow barred news coverage. Fulton cited fear of harm. The inquiry touched a Savery package of poisonous powder found on the Savery property and also subpoenas were served to AFL Building Service Employee union rep Charles Pirtle of East St Louis Illinois.
Detroit’s oldest meat packing firm pays a $10,000 payroll to 175 employees from President Joseph Strobl down after three weeks of no pay to avert bankruptcy. Local 190 CIO United Packinghouse Workers backed the plan once receiverhip began last August. Plant resumed three weeks ago with 175 of 300 workers. rest to return as business improves.

Campaign chairman B J Newburger and B D Silliman of Public Welfare praised 1 500 volunteers who raised the Cedar Rapids Community Chest total to 227 318 99 dollars, 100 3 percent of the 226 730 39 goal. Final audit awaits all reports Friday or Saturday.
Mrs Verna Burr Anderson born July 31 1924 in Marshalltown served as a Wave in World War II. She married Sept 12 1945 in San Francisco and is survived by husband three children two sisters a brother and her parents. Services to be held at Barta Hesser chapel with time to be announced and viewing after 5 p.m. Friday.
Conrad Spitznagle of 204 Fifth Street SW died Wednesday. Services are at Beatty chapel at 3 p.m. Friday with Rev. E A Widmann officiating. Burial follows at Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
Memorial services for Lynn G. Taylor son of Mr and Mrs John Taylor of 1401 Bever avenue SE will be conducted in Beatty chapel at 1 30 p m Friday by the Rev D Loferski of St Johns Episcopal church Mr Taylor died in Los Angeles Oct 21.
In San Luis Obispo California jurors deadlocked eight to four for acquittal after eight and a half hours of deliberation in the trial of Margaret Ryan society matron. The judge dismissed the panel and set November 19 for a new trial hearing.
Advanced square dancing classes from 8 to 10 p m Saturday move to the Memorial coliseum auditorium from the armory. Cedar Rapids area dancers from outlying communities are invited with no admission charge, though an expense defraying collection will be taken. A full November dance on the 24th will cap the month with both beginner and advanced dancers.
Mrs. Zwingle Spangler age 94 died Wednesday at Cottage hospital Santa Barbara after a brief illness. She was mother of Harrison E. Spangler Cedar Rapids Republican Party leader and Iowa National Committeeman. Survived by a daughter Estelle Cole. longtime resident of Adair Iowa. Spangler flew to California for funeral arrangements.
Judge Floyd Philbrick entered an innocent plea for Elizabeth Dagley after she refused to plead. Dagley, 57, formerly a Cedar Rapids teacher, is charged with writing a false 120.17 dollar check on Enzler’s May 26. Police say she cashed other bad checks in Cedar Rapids last summer. She was returned from Texas where she was arrested on a Linn county warrant.
The sheriff's office probes a prowling at the Charles Shaffer farm home six miles north of Alburnett. Deputy Larry Condon reports Shaffer lost $80 in change from a fruit jar, with entry method still undetermined and the theft likely in the last week or two.
Three suits filed Wednesday and Thursday include two by St. Luke s Hospital seeking 143.40 from Clarence and Virginia Cravens and 146.67 from Clifford and Wilma Medley. A third suit by Family Finance Company against Verden and Estel Wear seeks 230.73 on a promissory note. Louis F. Whitney was awarded a default judgment of 77.04 against Ed Emanuel in an account suit.
The council approved $1,370 for a fluoridation feeder to treat city water with fluoride. Waterworks Supt. Leo Louis said delivery in ~60 days, with sodium fluoride costed at $11.05 per 100 pounds from McKesson-Robbins for 20,000 pounds plus delivery after Jan. 1.
An Indianapolis housewife wrote a detailed letter to the internal revenue bureau accusing her tax-evading husband but failed to name him sign the letter or provide an address. The missive revealed long time evasion yet stayed anonymous.
Cedar Rapids city council approved a $1200 allocation for the Civil Defense Council covering November December and January. Defense Director W E Cleaves had requested $800 for two months. Finance Commissioner Louis D Burgos proposed an extra $400 for one more month. Funds from the 1952 budget will be available after January 27.
A hearing on the deportation warrant for Antonia Sentner will be held by the U S immigration and naturalization service next Wednesday in St Louis. Her husband William Sentner, a Communist, has worked on labor negotiations in Cedar Rapids for the Farm Equipment Workers union. She was arrested October 7, 1949, for belonging to an organization advocating overthrow of the government and was later arrested under the McCarran Act.
A group from the Iowa school for the blind at Vin ton will present a Friday 8 p.m. program at D Park Presbyterian Church. Sponsored by Semper Fidelis the event includes Braille reading and music. The hour long program is open to the public.
Cedar Rapids recruiters report thirteen new enlistees with ten entering the Navy and three joining the Marine Corps. Nine Navy recruits signed for a first hitch. Richard D. Burger 24 of 103 Second Street NW re enlisted. Marine enlistees are Glenn E. Downing 19 of Thirtieth Street Drive SE Clarence E. Bream 20 of Iowa City Maurice S. Maire 19 of Monticello. Downing joined the reserves and went on immediate active duty.

The CIO Political Action Director Jack Kroll said the union fears special interest lobbyists more than mink coats or deep freezes. He noted the CIO and the Democratic party are not allied, with few Republicans likely to receive backing in 1952. He condemned money stolen by lobbies and questioned oil, gas, and rate monopolies.

The Iowa Safety Congress campaign to cut hunting accidents during Gun Safety Week November 11 to 18 starts with gun safety schools and demonstrations. Harry Linn of Des Moines heads the effort with the State Conservation Commission and partners. More than 600 speakers and officers will assist local groups, and nearly 200000 safety literature pieces are being disseminated. Gunery week last year reportedly saved at least five hunters.
President Truman defended a broad peace plan promising equal protection for all nations and safeguards against bad faith. He warned strong defenses are needed amid Soviet deceit and the Korean war, stating the free world must be built up to deter aggression and ensure real peace. Eisenhower’s encouraging report on Europe’s defenses was cited.

The 133rd aircraft control and warning squadron members, recently activated for federal service, will receive air force blues soon. Major ElRoy Novak noted part of the uniform shipment is at Camp Dodge and training at Alexandria, La., begins Nov 20. S/Sgt. Stanley Pokorney left for the base as the first advance detachment. The unit’s Cedar Rapids airmen were honored by VFW Post 788 at a Wednesday night party.
Mrs. Del bert Ferguson 31 of New Boston Illinois pled guilty to assault and asked probation after an incident at New Boston grade school. Judge James Allen set a probation hearing for November 17 and released her on 500 dollars bond. Police say she attacked principal Miss Mabel Knox when two Ferguson children were sent home for wearing blue jeans.
District Judge Tom Murrow set next Wednesday for the trial of John Masterson 24 of Des Moines for the cathedral stabbing of his former girlfriend Theresa O Connor 23. Masterson from Iowa City where he is under psychiatric examination will be brought to Des Moines for the proceeding. The defense has four days to file an insanity plea and Saturday is the deadline to file.
