Textbook rentals hit limits as costs rise for students
Textbook rental programs touted as student savings face limits from scarce titles, frequent new editions, and professors demanding choice. About half of major bookstores, including at Iowa, Iowa State, and Northern Iowa, offered rentals this fall, up from about 300 stores last year, aiming to cut the $600 to $900 yearly book expense. Programs are costly to start and hard to run.
