New Oppelt trial motion asks for new trial in White case
A motion filed in Johnson County District Court seeks a new trial for 24 year old David Oppelt who was convicted of second degree murder in the May 27 Iowa City stabbing death of Steven Scott White 16. Oppelt's attorneys contend the court erred by allowing references to another stabbing and by denying a jury instruction on not guilty by reason of insanity. They also challenge late prosecutor statements and the involvement of psychiatrists listening to each other testimony. A ruling is due in 30 days. Oppelt awaits sentencing while jailed in Johnson County.
