Chicago police recount Mrs Elmer Phillips saying she strangled her 15 month old daughter Betty Mae in her crib amid marriage and motherhood strain. She walked city streets for hours before surrendering to police after phoning her husband. Officers quoted her as wanting a divorce.
Senator Russell of Georgia, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, warned that new atomic weapons would be used if armistice talks fail. He spoke on the matter Tuesday in Washington, emphasizing the potential wartime contingencies and U S policy stance.
Armstrong may have memory lapse about a supposed kidnapping to California. Sheriff Lemke and FBI questioned Armstrong for hours. doctors found no narcotics or injuries. A lone gunman robbed Aetna Finance Company in downtown Des Moines of 1338.50 dollars about 2 15 p m on Monday. Linn county district court announced the November term trial schedule by County Attorney Willis A. Glassgow. Husek aged 46 of 1446 First A avenue NE was ordered by Judge Charles Penningroth to plead by 10 a.m. Saturday on a drunken driving charge after his car collided with two parked vehicles near 1511 A avenue NE and then with a Sunshine Mission vehicle owned by Frank Ward and another owned by David Hauskins at 1501 A avenue NE.
John E Goemaat 21 of 510 F avenue NW pled not guilty to a desertion and abandonment charge. Judge Floyd Philbrick set his bond at $2000. Goemaat waived to the grand jury last Friday in justice court but the charge was refiled in district court. He is accused of beating his wife and two children.
A seven man Linn county grand jury sat in session after being impaneled by Judge Charles Penningroth for the November term. The jurors chosen from 12 men were R. L. Stallman J. M. Winchell H. A. Knapp R. P. Ink John G. Vernon W. C. Trefz and O. R. Kramer.
Henry Grother filed suit Tuesday against Norma Byers seeking possession of real estate at 933 Sixteenth Street NE and 500 damages for wrongful detention. He alleges the property was conveyed to him Oct 1 but she refuses to turnover. The wills matters and divorce action are noted with names and amounts.
The USNS Howard Woodford docked in San Diego Sunday carrying 946 marine veterans of the Korean fighting. Among them are Sgt. Hassan Kalell and Sgt. Frank O Rozinek of Cedar Rapids and Sgt. Warner A Krohn of Fayette county returning from Korea.
Dubuque County Sheriff Leo Martin raided the Peru club northeast of Dubuque Monday night. Some liquor was confiscated. Operator Don Matous was ordered to appear in Dubuque court Tuesday.

Miss Maud A. Stamy 78 lifelong Linn county resident died at 11:45 p.m. Monday after a long illness in a Cedar Rapids nursing home. Survived by brother Otto Stamy of Marion nephews Elmer Stamy and N. L. Sanders niece Mrs Paul Rose. She belonged to Westminster Presbyterian church and was a past noble grand of Star of Maine Rebekahs. Services Thursday 1:30 p.m. in Turner chapel with Dr Andrew E Kurth officiating. Burial in Dunkard cemetery eight miles north of Cedar Rapids. Friends may call at the chapel.
Sadie Scott Dotson 90 died Sunday at her daughter Mrs. Paul Patterson's home in Pasadena California. Services will be held 1 30 p m Wednesday at Barta Hesser chapel with Rev Frank Ward. Burial in Linwood cemetery. Survived by daughter Mrs George Bauman of Los Angeles 10 grandchildren five great grandchildren. She lived in California last three years and was affiliated with Westminster Presbyterian church born in Davenport.
Frank Pohorsky 383 of 318 Twelfth Street NE Cedar Rapids died in a local hospital after a brief illness at 2:40 PM. Born May 24 1868 in Litomysl Czechoslovakia he was 40 years a retired Rock Island car man. Services set for 2 PM Thursday at Kuba Funeral Home with Theodore Hlubacek officiating. Cremation committal. Friends may call after 1 PM Wednesday.
Grace Marchal Henning 64 a former Cedar Rapids resident died Monday in a Des Moines hospital Survivors include her husband a son Paul five daughters Virginia Ellen Carol Maureen and Marilyn two brothers Paul Marchal and C J Marchal Cedar Rapids and a sister Marie Switzer Des Moines Funeral services will be held Thursday at Des Moines.
Harry H Schlueter died Monday. Services set for 2 p.m. Wednesday in Brush chapel conducted by Theodore B Hlubucek. Burial in Bohemian National cemetery. Friends may call. A stepfather John Blaylock of Walford was omitted from Monday’s Gazette survivor list.
