Inmate crafts sell to fund prison art program
Velma Whiting, an inmate at the Iowa Correctional Institute for Women in Mitchellville, has sold about 70 crocheted puppies and $30 dolls. She learns business skills in a 13 week class funded by a Ms Foundation grant, aided by staff to price items and manage profits for restitution and savings. Kristi Hamilton also contributes art for fundraisers, while inmates must avoid excessive profits.
