Cedar Rapids Police cited an employee at the New Shack Tavern at 2545 Old River Rd SW for selling cigarettes to a minor during a Saturday check. Officials say 16 other local businesses refused to sell to the minor during the same operation.

Heating funds may come up short this winter
Hawkeye Area Community Action Program offers heating assistance to low income families but projects about 2,000 applicants will be turned away this winter. Last year 5,851 people received aid as costs rose. Applications run until April 15 at HACAP offices across Benton Cedar Iowa Johnson Linn and Washington counties.
