Intra-Party Battles Seen for Demo Posts

Democratic lawmakers plan caucuses November 13 at Hilton Inn Des Moines to nominate speakers and leaders for the 60 seat Iowa House and to choose party leadership. Senate Democrats view a contest for pro tempore and majority leader, with potential changes in votes from a disputed Woodbury Monona district race. Republicans meet November 12 at National Motor Inn to select leaders, with potential challenges to Floyd Millen and Andrew Varley.

Vote Total Changes but Winner Same in 15th District

A Linn County canvass of the special election for the 15th state senate district changed one precinct results but left Robert Rush as winner over A Gordon Holmes. The Marion ward one precinct one tally became Rush 436 Holmes 271 replacing 172 and 0 previously reported. Official totals: Rush 13 777 Holmes 9 254 with a corrected Marion ward three precinct two Holmes 273 instead of 2 273.

United Way Drive Near Mid Point

The 1976 United Way campaign has reached 46 percent of its $1,465,000 goal with $666,649 pledged so far. Campaign Chairman Darrell Schumacher reported slow collections but optimism remains if the current pace continues, noting full participation at several companies and schools.

Variety of Charges Filed Against 3 in C R Cases

Three people were arrested on a range of charges Thursday. A 16 year old Fairfax youth faces aggravated burglary in a Betty Gorman residence robbery on Waveland Drive NW. Mrs Gorman was struck with a flashlight as money was taken from her purse.

Kopel Plans Audit of Linn County Clerk Office Time Cards

County Auditor Merle Kopel will audit time cards from the Linn County Clerk of Court First Avenue office at the request of Deputy Clerk Judy DePauw. The audit targets all of 1976, checking time cards against payroll and vacation records for discrepancies, with possible subpoenas to obtain vacation data if needed.

Five Arrests Made on Drunk Driving Counts

Five persons were charged with drunk driving Thursday night and Friday morning. James P. Ballard, 45, New Berlin, was arrested at 10 58 p m after a vehicle crash in a tavern parking lot on the 100 block of F avenue NW. Donald A. McEnany, 54, Ryan, was arrested at 7 p m on highway 13 in Coggon for sleeping with the motor running. Betty J. Seip, 27, 5408 Klinger street SW, arrested at 10 11 p m after crossing the center line in the 2800 block of Sixth street SW. Lloyd J. Woods, 49, 626 Twenty-first avenue SW, arrested at 3 05 a m after avoiding an accident in the 2700 block of Sixth street SW. Keith L. Chesmore, 41, 1619 K avenue NE, arrested at 2 40 a m in the 700 block of Lindale drive for speeding. Today philosopher and historian Will Durant is 91.

Dixie votes split as Spellman beats Ray 75 to 66 in Dixie

In a small Dixie near Walla Walla Washington residents backed Republican John Spellman 75 to 66 over Dixy Lee Ray. An auditor’s worker noted Dixie typically votes Republican like the county. Ray still won overall. Also note Roy Rogers is 64.
