Wholesale prices rose 0.6 percent in October led by sharp gains in industrial goods fuel lumber and autos. Farm prices fell 1.2 percent while consumer food prices declined 0.4 percent as overall wholesale inflation cools slightly from September but remains the third sharp monthly rise this year.
In Los Angeles a federal judge ruled that adopting the family viewing period by networks violated the First Amendment. The FCC was found to have threatened action if networks did not comply and plaintiff Norman Lear is entitled to nominal damages.
The forecast calls for a clear and cold night with lows in the low 20s and a partly cloudy warmer Friday with highs in the low to mid 20s. The page also lists section ports for Marion and entries for movies society sports and ads.
In a Thursday move Acting Police Chief Gareth Clift replaced Wallace Johnson with Capt. James Hames as head of the detective bureau. Commissioner Ed Colton said the change is temporary for four to six weeks to test the arrangement and improve supervision and performance.

President-elect Jimmy Carter prepares for a transition with Vice President-elect Walter Mondale arriving in Plains Georgia. They will hold a joint news conference and meet transition officials as Carter expects to open a Washington office and set plans for staffing and the 1978 budget.
The Plains Baptist Church rejects firing Pastor Bruce Edwards over a plan to admit black members and test a 1985 resolution. Edwards, who says he will not resign, argues upholding Scripture obligates him to oppose the deacons’ action and preserve church unity. State Sen. Hugh Carter, Jimmy Carter’s cousin, is among the deacons.
