John Winant Ends Life in Concord Home Tragedy
John G. Winant aged 58 former ambassador to Great Britain shot himself in the head with a .32 pistol in his Concord New Hampshire bedroom. He died about 8 20 p m after failing to regain consciousness as physician Dr James W Jameson attended him. His private secretary said the other pistol had been thrown against the wall. Mrs Winant and children were notified and traveled from New York to the family home. Winant, a three term New Hampshire governor and public figure, had recently resigned from UN duties to return to private life citing fatigue and a wish to resume his life as a private citizen. He was a Republican who supported Roosevelt and fought for higher workers wages and social reforms in New Hampshire and nationwide.
