Long Beach AP report on Howard Hughes lifting his 400,000 pound flying boat to about 100 mph for a taxi test then an actual takeoff. Hughes described buoyancy and praised the flight while a Senate probe into his war aircraft work continued in Washington.
Des Moines prisoners at Fort Madison collected more than 300 dollars to fund an appeal for executive clemency for Louis B. Hofer of Indianapolis who faces a December 10 execution for murder. Warden Lainson said the inmate fund rise is a common practice for death row cases and Hofer, described as a lonely man with two children, will likely have a clemency application filed soon by attorney A. L. Wensel.
Marvin J. Sporman revised his plan for a large Second Avenue SE dwelling, reducing height from eight to about three and a half stories and cutting projected families from 112 to 52 or 54. Ira C. Copley, 83, chairman of the board of Copley Press Inc and publisher of 17 newspapers in Illinois and California, died Sunday.
Howard Lang 12 signed a handwritten confession admitting he killed Lonnie Fellick 7 on Saturday Oct 18 in Thatcher's Woods. He said Gerald Michalek 9 helped hold Lonnie while he struck him. Police, doctors and deception experts questioned him as the body was found days later.

Washington AP The Chicago advisory rent board urged the housing expeditor to approve a 15 percent across the board increase for about 500000 rental units in Cook Lake Du page and Kane counties. Another 300000 units already have tenants approved 15 percent raises. Acting Housing Expeditor Tighe E Woods has 30 days to act.

Reports from central Peru say at least 51 people are killed across seven towns after a weekend earthquake. Officials fear the toll could reach 100 as rescue teams assess the damage. Landslides from the mountains swept into the Satipo River, damming it and flooding riverside homes and residents.
Charleston resident Major James C. Covington Jr. used his nine foot boat to reach a service station amid a citywide flood. The rising tide turned streets near New and Tradd into a temporary sea, and Covington ferried trapped residents to safety after his boat floated away from its trailer.

The Cedar Rapids city council authorized a Chicago firm Alvord Burdick and Howson to survey current needs and draft plans for a planned addition to the waterworks plant. The firm, which designed the present plant, will coordinate with local engineers and the waterworks superintendent. A bond issue for the addition may be sought next spring, financed from waterworks profits, not tax levy.
