Famed Wit Thurber Dies at 66 in New York

James Thurber 66, noted writer humorist and cartoonist, died Thursday of pneumonia after brain surgery for a blood clot. A master satirist famed for his doodled drawings and The Talk of the Town column with E B White, Thurber had retired sight in both eyes but kept his humor.

City Wins Ruling in Tax Trial Over Annexed Area

Cedar Rapids wins a tax ruling by Judge Clair E. Hamilton in Linn district court covering the 10 square mile annexation south and west of the city. The decision says the annexed area is subject to 1961 city taxes and applies to all properties in the annexed area.

Good Neighbor Drive Nears Quota in Cedar Rapids Campaign

The United Good Neighbors drive has reached 13.5 percent of its $636,160 goal to support 29 agencies. Coe College schools group tops with 117.8 percent of its $1,200 goal, while Nordstrom Oil Co earns 100 percent participation and a plaque.

Tandy Resigns as Adjutant General

Major Gen. Fred C. Tandy 64 resigned Friday as Iowa adjutant general. Appointed in 1950 by Gov. Beardsley he plans to retire from active duty. Resignation effective December 15. a new four year term from Gov. Erbe would have run to July 3, 1963.

Luther College Gymnasium Destroyed In Major Fire

A fire at Luther College in Decorah caused an estimated 1 million dollars in damage to the C. K. Preus gymnasium. The blaze started by an explosion late Thursday, endangered Brant Hall but did not injure anyone. Firefighters from five towns battled the flames, evacuating 400 dorm residents in near freezing weather while the adjacent science building remained intact.

Friday morning's blaze destroyed the gym nasium building at Luther college in Decorah, the third major fire in the school's 100 years of operation. The Old Main building burned in 1889 and the replacement structure burned in 1942.
