After 75 Years Cedar Bluff Post Office Closes
Grant White reports Cedar Bluff’s fourth class post office, in operation for three quarters of a century, closed Oct. 6. Tipton-Ray Benda, longtime local postmaster, turned in his final report and stamp. The Cedar Bluff community, once envisioned as a regional hub, faced declining activity as bridges and rail plans faded. The town will now receive mail via rural route from Tipton, though its fishing and scenic beauty remain noted features.

Iowa Researchers Study Relation of Cancer Smoking
Volunteer researchers with the Iowa division of the American Cancer Society began a second follow up on a study to see if smoking relates to lung cancer. About 10,648 Iowa men are in the national study. The 1952 Iowa effort traced 99.7 percent of men interviewed in nine divisions. The follow up will track deaths to see if cancer death rates differ for smokers and non-smokers and will use national statisticians to analyze causes of death once established.
