Cedar Rapids Gazette (Newspaper) - May 31, 1974, Cedar Rapids, Iowa Peoples' Right To Govern Selves Is Stressed by Feld Bx I T ank \>i* ITic ii Mist ill 11 MI 11,nil issue iii lins campaign "is restoring Hic rishis of Hie people lo govern themselves.” according to Mik(‘ Keld, TH, of Oelwein That’s why he left a Hood paying jab as a congressman's aide last December to come hack lo Iowa to run for Hie Republican nomination for Second district congressman "The people want representative HOVernment aud they don’t believe thev ve been netting it. Feld said iii an inter \ lew "Mad at ‘Ins’ " "I realize that Culver (Congressman John Culver. < edar Rapids Democrat I is very popular now Rut times choline and people chance and. generally speaking they are mad at the ‘ins’ at the local, state and national levels, regardless of party “I don’t have all the answers, I want to make that very clear Rut I have none around the district talking and working with tIn* people I have campaigned extensively and I have a Hood grasp of what they want. “The professional politicians say this can’t be; that yon can't handle questions with simple •yes' or no’ answers Takes Stands “Rut if that is true, how can people speak out? How can you agree or disagree with a ‘maybe’ that never gets off the fence? "One of the main issues is taking a stand and I ve been taking stands. People know where I stand on every issue. ‘ They think they’ve beers hoodwinked and lied to and they've bought their last bottle of sn.ike oil iioin bist talking professional politicians and the people know who they arc too Although this is the first time the unmarried Mr Ccid has run for congressional office, he is no neophyte iii congressional politics — or iii polit u s generally . for that matter < (digression.ii Aide Ile has worked sis sin aide for three CO I* congressmen — .John Kv I and William Seherlo of Iowa and Cene Snyder of Kentucky — and he stinted his political life sis si Democrat upon Ins graduation from Notre Dame His first campaign wsis to help a brother. Dr. .lames Feld, then an Oelwein dentist, in Ins unsuccessful effort to wrest the llditi Democratic nomination for Second district congressman from Culver Dr Feld is now with the VA hospital iii Des Moines W hen Dr.Fold lost to Culver. Fold, a conservative. said: "The Democratic party left me, I didn’t leave the party. I am for individual rights. I don’t believe we need a bunch of so-called experts in Washington telling us how to live our lives." As one w ho lakes stands Fold bas one on the stale ol the economy "< ut Spending” I .nil for cutting excessive, wasteful spending," he said "I think we could cut every federal department RI percent across tlx* board aud that includes the military "I'm strong on military but doubt that two men are needed to drive a three-star general around — one to drive and one to open the door "I am against price mil ti i pu lilt iou by large corporations. especially the oil iii dus!iv. There may be an energy shortage but I don’t believe there is a crisis W hen the prices went up. suddenly there was no shortage We don't even know who owns the oil companies." Feld said he favors a rollback iii oil prices but {lie question of how far back needs more study. lf elected, Feld would like to be on the agriculture committee but he wouldn't indebt himself to the house leadership to win such an appointment IO!' System "This is where the IDI system starts,” he explained "Von asked leadership for a certain committee job, leadership says lots of people want that job, so if you got it on leadership's terms you’re iii debt. "If you go hat in hand for a certain committee job, you won’t be in any position to revise the seniority system, you’ll be a part of it.” And Fold wants to revise the seniority system, not eliminate it entirely. He favors rotating committee chairmanships Mike Feld every two years as a means of dc tanging the system Feld also wants lo open all congressional committee meetings to the public Other Stands Here are his stands on other subjects I ax reform "We’ve got to quit writing laws that take a Philadelphia lawyer to figure out This is tied to the seniority system. Von won’t tie able to do a tiling on tax reform because one man. Wilbur Mills, handles taxes. He is a one-man committee He controls it lf he could do something about tax reform, Fold would close income tax loopholes, come up witll a simplified iii come tax form and seek to equalize the lax burden Abortion "I’m against abortion and for right-to-life. I would sign a petition to discharge tin' abortion bill in house judiciary committee for floor debate Agriculture: "I’m against a strategic grain reserve because it is a depressant and both Republicans and Democrats have used it in the past to dump grain on the market which has resulted iii depressing the price Family Farm "I am for preservation of the family farm for people love Hic land corporations don I Amnesty . "There's a lins conception on tins It doesn't mean young men can't come home They haven't lost their citizenship Rut when they come home they should have to answer to the law — each case on its own merits "If conv feted, I don’t want them planting petunias or periwinkles with the taxpayers money, nor put in jail and the key thrown away < ampaign disclosure I am in favor of disclosure id all campaign contributions and expenses but I atli not in favor of disclosing personal financial status I fiat is an invasion of privacy" Climbers Stray, Banned by Nepal KATMANDU, Nepal (AID -T he Nepalese government is annoyed with a West Herman cli tubing; team that sealed the wrong 24,<>82 lect Himalayan peak Fhe eight man expedition bas bee;\lu cd SHOU and banned from (-limbing iii Nepal for three years after three ol the team s members climbed An napurna-4 instead ol the 26.033 feet Annapurna 2 "We did not climb Annapurna- I intentionally." explained one of the offending (Timbers "We went to the top to have a belter look at a possible route to the summit of Annapiir-na-2 ’’ The Cedar Rapids Gazette in May ll 1971 SEVENTEEN by Bernard Lansky 55 IIN lins ll XI h III ITM III!'
