Wish Fulfilled, She Sees Hero Son's Grave Again
Mrs. Joh Mayes and her husband traveled from the Gila River Reservation in Arizona to Arlington National Cemetery to visit the grave of Cpl Ira Hayes, a World War I hero who helped raise the flag on Iwo Jima. The family funded the visit, and a chaplain led prayers as Hayes was honored on Memorial Day. Hayes later faced media fame and personal struggle after the famed flag raising and the publicity that followed.

Former East Iowan Killed in Accident
Alfred Stoll of Hooper Nebraska, 23, died in a motor vehicle crash south of Prairie du Chien at 10 43 pm Friday. He was driving a car owned by Judith Novacek of Prairie du Chien with her as a passenger. Stoll and his brother had been visiting the area. The vehicle struck the rear of a camper. Nine other passengers were treated and released. Stoll was the son of the Rev Henry Stoll, former pastor of the Lutheran church in McGregor. His body will be returned to Hooper. Donations to the Hayes Memorial Scholarship Fund were requested in memory of Kenner Hayes, Korean War veteran and Purple Heart recipient. The memorial ceremony included a wreath and quiet prayers.

Father and Son Injured In Arlington Car Crash
A two car collision 32 miles northwest of Arlington left Lennarii Knipper in fair condition with head injuries and lacerations. His son Thomas, 7, and another son Kenneth, 8, were treated and released or in good condition. The other driver Daryle Gamm, 8, was treated and released. Knipper was cited for failure to yield.
