Five year old James Bailey Cash Jr. was kidnapped from his bed in Princeton, Florida, after a note threatened death if authorities were alerted. A ransom of $10,000 in small bills was dropped on a country road but no contact from the kidnapers followed. A crowd gathered and law enforcement, including the FBI, searched the area as fear rose for the boy’s safety. The abductor reportedly left a third note, and Hoover sent inspectors to assist in the probe.

Mrs Mildred Steggall 30 of 703 Fifth Street SE Cedar Rapids jumped from a second story window Monday noon. Her husband John Steggall grabbed her leg at the knee, delaying the fall before she tumbled ten feet landing on her shoulder and hip. She was taken to Mercy hospital then returned home. Police say the leap followed a drinking party. Steggall cited her remark she would "end it all" but she did not talk to officers.

John Sidler, 51, of 118 Tenth avenue SW, was arrested Tuesday at 11 am on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Sieler’s 13 year old son Floyd drove from Shellsburg, grabbing the wheel to prevent a ditch, while a witness followed in Palo. In jail Sieler shared a cell with his 47 year old brother Henry, fined earlier for a disorderly house.
Mexico City dispatches report general Cedillo captured at El Salto and exiled by decree of President Lazaro Cardenas as the San Luis Potosi uprising collapses. Only scattered Cedillistas remain at large and are expected to be seized soon.
In a Senate debate on a 3 billion relief bill, Senator Wheeler demands a full accounting from the treasury on the 2 billion stabilisation fund. He argues the fund’s purpose and results have not matched Congress’s intent and calls for action to lift prices to 1926 levels and align monetary conditions.

Goodyear Tire and Rubber workers return to plants after a four day strike. Union locals vote 9 to 1 to accept concessions and seek a written contract while Goodyear says talks remain exploratory. About 8 000 workers affected with 80 injured in a riot last Thursday.
North Tonawanda New York AP reports Anna Logare 41 was held for the grand jury after arraignment on kidnapping 4 year old Betty Jane Hobbs taken to Coolville Ohio last week for a visit. Judge Harrington released her to the sheriff until the grand jury June 10. Betty Jane was found at her aunt's home in Coolville and returned to her father Ellsworth Hobbs.
Cedar Rapids sweltered as the thermometer hit 87 degrees at 2:30 p.m., matching the year's high first recorded May 16. The day began at 62 a.m. and climbed through 79 at 10, 86 at 1:15 p.m., with Monday peaking at 82 at 12:30 p.m. and cooler later.
The Supreme Court ruled 5 to 2 that the National Labor Relations Board may withdraw from the Third Circuit in the Republic Steel case, reinstating 5,000 striking workers. Justice Roberts said the circuit lacked jurisdiction, while Justices Butler and McReynolds dissented and Cardozo and Stone did not participate. Officials consider applying the ruling to the Ford case in Covington as the board renews efforts to depose board members and employees, calling Ford’s petitions a fishing expedition.
The city council rejected two base bids for a pistol range, with bids at about 4,000 while the department expected 2,500. Loomis Brothers bid 3,950 and Stark Building 3,954, plus several alternates. architect Zalesky had previously faced similar bid issues. The vote was unanimous to reject all bids.
The National Safety Council reported a 15 percent drop in traffic deaths over six months ending last November, saving an estimated 2,850 lives. First four months of 1938 saw 2,060 fewer deaths than 1937, a 19 percent decrease, while mileage rose 4 percent in early 1938. If trends continue, 7,500 lives could be saved versus last year. Only the Rocky Mountain states showed a rise, at 13 percent.

Plymouth Mass AP reports Stanley E Bakewell construction foreman from Gibsonia Pa was convicted of painting historic Plymouth rock and faces a nine month sentence in the house of correction.
