A Tuesday afternoon crash on I 380 in Johnson County left no serious injuries. One occupant was flown to a hospital as a precaution due to a prior medical condition, and traffic was backed up for hours while investigators cleared the scene.
William Leroy Tomson, 70, of La Vista Nebraska, died when his car flipped onto its top in a west ditch at the intersection of 80th Street and Beverly Road just north of Fairfax. Investigators say another driver was passing when Tomson left the roadway and was thrown from the vehicle. The incident remains under investigation for possible criminal charges. Traffic was halted on 80th Street for several hours during the response. Fairfax Fire and Area Ambulance assisted.
A Chicago man Jaslyn Kelly, 26, was sentenced in Johnson County court to 10 years in prison for third degree sexual assault. The 2018 case involved an Iowa City woman who slept in her residence when Kelly allegedly assaulted her after entering with a phone flashlight. DNA matched, a April jury verdict found him guilty, and the victim delivered an impact statement describing lasting trauma.
