Saigon reports 5,000 American deaths this year as last week’s tally brings the figure to 4,987 through Saturday. Through Tet, U.S. servicemen total 7,929 killed since year start. Allied operations continue, with 50+ battalion-size actions and heavy Viet Cong casualties northwest of Saigon.
Conferees in Paris clashed Thursday as talks deteriorated into a sharp exchange. Lodge condemned North Vietnamese and Vietcong demands to exclude Saigon and pressed for a mutual timetable. In New Canaan Conn AP the father of 10 year old Mary Mount appealed for her return as police pursue a kidnapping theory. Joseph Mount IBM centers manager asked the FBI stay on standby and urged tips to police or churches while stressing his daughter’s safety. He said his line isn’t monitored and tips will be confidential. Mary was last seen in a park Tuesday evening with her brother.
A mismatched operation between forward and aft crew of the Guitarra caused a $50 million nuclear submarine to sink at its Napa river outfitting dock on May 15. No injuries were reported, refloat occurred May 18, and repair costs run into millions as authorities faulted inadequate coordination and careless procedures. Congressmen Stratton Hunt Randall cite the incident as wholly avoidable, urging a fuller report to the Armed Services Committee.
Washington AP reports a new defense policy that calls reservists or National Guardsmen to active duty for up to two years if they fail to meet drill and training obligations. The tougher rule targets those deferred from the draft by joining the guard or reserves, shifting focus from mere attendance to overall performance in drills and duties.
The John F Kennedy birthplace in Brookline was dedicated as a national historic site on the 82nd anniversary of his birth. Mrs Kennedy presented the deed to Interior Secretary Russell Train as Sen Edward Kennedy and Joan attended the ceremony. An ex Wisconsin Motor Corp. worker opened fire in Milwaukee offices on Thursday wounding seven people including a police sergeant before he was shot and captured. One victim in critical condition. flee over two fences as workers escaped. The gunman, 26, had been fired in April for insubordination and striking a foreman.
