University of Iowa studies fetal alcohol syndrome model
University of Iowa anatomy researchers, led by Dr. James West, study long term effects of maternal alcohol use on offspring with a 699,093 grant from the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Using rat models from 1986 and 1987, findings suggest binge drinking in pregnancy may more strongly impact fetal brain and behavior than total alcohol amount. The project seeks factors influencing severity and mechanisms behind fetal alcohol syndrome.
