Bids on the new Robert Lucas school in Iowa City totaled 285,080 with Frantz Construction Co. as general contractor at 218,100 and Cedar Rapids Electric Supply 20,630 plus C. F. Path 45,150 for plumbing and heating. An alternate adds two classrooms for 26,300 and parking areas at Mark Twain and Roosevelt for about 19,000. Addition bids for Twain and Roosevelt were opened Feb 21 with base bids 269,132.

Strikers Return at Waterloo Chamberlain Plant
About 500 workers at the Chamberlain Corp in Waterloo resumed work after a one day walkout ended when Hap Baugh of local 1318 IA Machinists declared the strike illegal. The walkout followed a disputed pay scale change tied to a plant time study affecting workers on defense contracts earning $1.87 per hour.
Crippen Sentenced in Fraudulent Stock Sales
Dale W. Crippen aged 40 received a five year prison term and five year probation for fraudulent sale of securities and mail fraud. He pled guilty to two counts on May 15 after facing fourteen counts across several states. Crippen is a former claims deputy of the Iowa State Employment Security Commission.

Man pleads innocent in stabbing of Edith Welsh
Quincy had pleaded innocent in the October stabbing death of Edith Welsh a 78 year old widow. He changed his plea in district court and a hearing was set for next Wednesday to determine the degree of murder and sentence. Welsh was stabbed 23 times and Foulks admitted attacking her with a hunting knife later discarding the weapon in the river. He offered no motive and said he liked Welsh because she was friendly with him.

Utility Rates Trial Recessed Until July 17
The Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Co. rate case against Iowa City is paused in Johnson County District Court until July 17 after direct testimony by the utility. Judge Miles denied dismissal and set July 17 for resumed direct testimony by the city. Rates in University Heights Coralville and Iowa City will align with bond-secured increases and prior temporary injunctions continue.
