Explosive tests planned to probe Mount St Helens magma flow
Researchers from UW, Rice University, USGS and partners plan iMUSH imaging experiments at Mount St Helens. They will place 80 foot wells around the volcano to detonate charges and record seismic signals, aiming to map magma pathways beneath the Cascades subduction zone. The $3 million project, funded mainly by NSF, seeks clearer insight into how magma travels from deep beneath to the crater.
