Bonnet Strings memoir chronicles a young Amish woman’s Vermont sojourn
Laura Farmer reviews Salema Miller Furlong’s Bonnet Strings, detailing how at age 20 she leaves Ohio’s Amish community for Vermont in the late 1970s. The memoir covers working at Pizza Hut, YWCA living, and a four month separation from her family, followed by two years back among her Amish roots while maintaining a correspondence with David. The narrative blends romance with reflections on faith, mental health, teen pregnancy, and the contrasts between Amish life and broader society.
