State DES data show April unemployment across Iowa varied from 10.6 percent in Chickasaw County to 1.5 percent in Johnson Story and Sioux counties as seasonal hiring and recalls improved overall markets. National rate stood at 5.4 percent.
DES Director Cynthia Eisenhauer reports April unemployment claims down 27 percent from March and 41 percent excluding manufacturing. Iowa’s labor force rises past 1.5 million to 1,508,100, with total employment up 20,000 to 1,444,200.
Gov. Terry Branstad called on the Legislature to modify Iowa forfeiture provisions to remove a loophole that lets drug dealers keep legally purchased homesteads from seizure. The move follows a unanimous Iowa Supreme Court ruling limiting the applicability of the homestead exemption in forfeiture cases.
