Sisters to Get Degrees in Medicine and Pharmacy

Brumm sisters of Emmetsburg near Iowa City are set to graduate Friday with Julia earning a pharmacy degree and high honors while Carolyn completes the medical degree. Betsy Brumm remains a nursing student, and Julia will deliver the student charge at commencement.

Power Pool Opposed by Midwest Electric Consumers Assn

Midwest Electric Consumers Assn, a Denver group for rural and public power utilities, will oppose a pooling plan filed with the Federal Power Commission. The Mid-Continent Area Power Pool would link regions in Minnesota North Dakota South Dakota Wisconsin Iowa Illinois Nebraska Montana. University of Iowa officials estimate up to 675000 dollars to modify air-conditioning systems to stop using underground Silurian aquifer water for cooling. Ten years ago the cost of living climbed .2 percent marking the third rise in as many months. The modest increase reflects ongoing price pressures across consumer goods and services.

Trail Plan Unveiled For 680-Mile Iowa River Route

Des Moines based Central Iowa Regional Planning Commission unveils a 680 mile river trail and path system as a major recommendation of the central Iowa outdoor recreation plan. The total public cost over 30 years is estimated at 100 million dollars funded by local state and federal sources. The plan calls for a Regional Open Space System of river and stream corridors with paved urban paths for cyclists pedestrians and horseback riders while remote sections favor hiking and boating access. A uniform sign system would mark existing and proposed ROSS areas.

Davenport based St Ambrose and Marycrest colleges merge into Newman College. The joint committee chose the name from about 200 options, effective July 1, 1973, honoring John Henry Cardinal Newman, namesake of campus Newman clubs and centers.

Mother 18 and daughter die in county crash near Dundee

A one car wreck on a county gravel road 22 miles south of Dundee at about 7 p.m. Wednesday killed Patricia Ann Cole 18 of Masonville and her 17‑month‑old daughter Sheila Renae. Two other teens, Walter McDill 16 of Dundee and Robert Miller 17 of Delhi, were injured. The car overturned after losing control on a hilltop, trapping the women under the wreckage. Survivors include Cole’s husband, parents, siblings, and stepfamilies. Services for Cole and her daughter are set for Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Shelly funeral home in Manchester.

Parole Revocation Hearing Set for Shoafstall

Jerry Shoafstall, wanted for parole revocation, appeared in Tama County District Court. Judge John L. Hyland appointed an attorney after Shoafstall said he had no funds. Hearing continued to 1 p.m. June 14. Shoafstall released on recognizance.

Boy, 9, Killed in Holstein Crash Near Highways 59 and 20

In rural Holstein Paul Zobel nine was killed when a two car collision occurred about three miles southeast of town Wednesday evening. He rode as a passenger in a car driven by his mother Mrs Jenis Zobel.

Robinette Firm Receivership Sale Okayed

In Toledo the Tama county district court authorized receivers William J. Beehm and Ben Morris to enter a purchase agreement with Milo J. Horak of Cedar Rapids for 40 000 of inventory shop equipment and other personal property at the Robinette Chevrolet business located at highways 63 and 30. The sale funds will cover encumbrances and taxes. the firm’s estimated total indebtedness is about 200 000 with existing secured debt of roughly 126 000 to Tama State Bank.
