New Techniques For Cleft Lip By UI Surgeon
University of Iowa otolaryngology expert Dr. Leslie Bernstein announced a novel cleft lip repair during the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Sacpsheve Surgery meeting and in JAMA. He reports 12 children with wide unilateral clefts show cosmetic improvement after 2 years, with tissue preservation and a zigzag scar designed to reduce contraction and prevent vermilion migration. Bernstein cautions the standard method suits only narrow clefts and advocates a later final nose repair after puberty, with cleft palate addressed around 30 months.
