Des Moines Youth Convicted of Manslaughter in Salvation Army Solicitor Slaying
Glen Ray Kidwell an 18 year old Kelley farm youth was found guilty of manslaughter by a district court jury in connection with the fatal shooting of W L Lowe a Salvation Army fund solicitor near Ankeny on March 25. The jury deliberated 24 hours and Kidwell faces up to eight years with sentencing set for June 3.

National Contest Winner Learned To Play Horn Year Ago
Margaret Huebner a 14 year old freshman at Postville High School began playing the baritone horn a year ago. She won a division one rating at the national regional music contest in Minneapolis competing with class A and AA schools. She has never been defeated earning class one in all Iowa contests prior. Miss Huebner also drums in the Postville marching band which held division one ratings in 1938 and 1939 and plays violin in the orchestra.

Iowa Coal Miners Accept New Contract With Union Shop
Iowa coal miners and the Iowa Coal Operators Association signed a two year contract effective March 31 1939 maintaining the旧 terms but adding a union shop clause requiring employees to join the United Mine Workers of America. All operators except Scandia Coal Co signed. Scandia plans to quit business. A separate contract in the Appalachian-Wayne district must be signed before 8000 miners can return to work after the expiration and strike.

Rev Charles Kirkland Pioneer Urbana Family dies at 83
The Rev Charles Kirkland a veteran of the Urbana Iowa area and brother of Judge Louis J. Kirkland died aged 83. Born in Philadelphia he moved to Urbana as a youth and later served as a Methodist minister and district elder in Atkinson Nebraska and western Kansas. He is survived by seven children 29 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren with two daughters predeceasing him.
