Emery J Miller secretary treasurer of the Marion Lions evening club will be honored at the final meeting before the summer recess. He retires after twelve years in the post and is a charter member of the club formed May 3 1921 and chartered June the same year. Dinner at 6 15 precedes the program at Sub urban.
Five people died in separate Iowa crashes over the weekend plus a young woman who died from earlier injuries. The weekend toll raised 1965 highway fatalities to 236, with four deaths Saturday including Darcus Moody and James McCurdy, and Delmar Trump, Marian Loerke, and Mary Auten later dying from injuries.
A lightning bolt hit the Frank Pillard farmhouse near Anamosa at 1 15 am Sunday setting the roof ablaze. Anamosa firefighters confined the blaze to the roof and second floor with smoke and water damage reported. Mr and Mrs Pillard and their son David escaped unharmed.
Robert Murray 26 of Wadena Iowa was killed when the motorcycle he drove collided with a car in San Pedro California. His wife Pat Murray was hospitalized in fair condition. Murray was thrown from the cycle and run over. He was a navy veteran stationed in the area and survived by his wife and four children.
Six teenagers were injured in a four car chain collision four miles west of Solon on Lake Macbride road Sunday afternoon. Sharon Kent 16 DeWitt suffered head injuries and was in serious condition at University Hospital. Claudia Jenison 15 DeWitt had facial injuries but good condition. Dennis Hall 18 Low Moor had facial injuries and was in fair condition. Others treated and released were Claudia Shaver 15 Debra Maher 16 Cedar Rapids and Richard Kelly 19 Grand Mound. The Iowa City driver Sally Helm missed a turn into an intersection and caused the crash.
Former Prime Minister Hayato Ikeda, 69, returns to the Diet in Tokyo for the first time since resigning eight months ago to seek treatment for a cancerous throat tumor. He now mostly stays at his residence.
