Farm Machinery Production Limited By War Programs
A War Production Board official said farm machinery output could be doubled but is blocked by needs of other war programs and labor limits. William K. Frank told a Senate agriculture subcommittee production is limited by relative essentiality and government demand. He noted spring output is double last year but still insufficient to meet farmer demand. Senator Lucas pressed that farmer needs align with food- production goals. Frank will provide data on exports after Bushfield cited a critical abroad letter.

Flooded Acres Can Still Yield With Late Planting Choices
Iowa State extension agronomist E S Dyas says flooded acres can still grow a crop this year. Soybeans top the late planting list with Richland variety ideal for low fertility soils but less suited to northern Iowa. other late options include Habaro Mandarin Wisconsin Manchu 606 and Early Minnesota Manchu for cooler regions. Soybean hay needs 1 to 2 bushels per acre depending on method, and inoculation is advised. Sudan grass sorghum early corn and millet also suit late planting for hay.

For early June planting in central and southern Iowa Iowa hybrids 4316 303 and 3553 perform well and are somewhat earlier than Iowa hybrids 939 and 30. Numerous early commercial hybrids are available from seed companies and dealers.
