Des Moines AP Commissioner Charles Friday discussed potential inclusion of war clauses in Iowa life policies. He noted insurers could cover drafted workers during war, while labor leaders oppose concessions. Friday urged broader sacrifice by all institutions and groups to defend democracy.
A jury of ten women and two men was sworn in Judge T. H. Goheen's court to hear a ten thousand dollar damage suit by Mrs. Mayme Wood of Celwein against the city. She, in a wheelchair, claims she suffered a compound fracture of the right ankle on December 26 1940 when ice and snow had accumulated in an Oelwein alley. She is a Fayette county Democrat and a former recorder candidate and extracts manufacturer. Jurors named include Mrs. H. T. Earl Bertha Lee Elsie Burd Helen Thompson Lola Reisner Frances Clara Schaefer Bessie Jellings Florence McCauley Marie Shippy Mabel Chicken Robert Loeb and Frank Guetzko.
R E Ed Hill publisher of Oxford Junction Wyoming and Lost Nation will assume the job June 1 succeeding Tex Grantham who leaves to join the Iowa state tax commission effective July 1. Hill received all 14 ballots cast by the Republican state central committee. The mail election should be confirmed at the next meeting Grantham said.
Governor George A. Wilson returned from a Washington conference with defense officials and voiced Iowa's pivotal role in national defense. He cited Iowa's strategic location, industrial potential, and strong agricultural output aiding the army and allied countries. Accompanying him was Edward A. Kimball of the Iowa Industrial and Defense Commission.
Four persons indicted by the Johnson county grand jury pled guilty on two counts each while two others pled guilty to one count each when arraigned in district court. Judge Harold D. Evans pronounced sentences including fines and jail terms. Kennedy, Smith, Gwynne, and Stangley of Iowa City faced counts of illegal gambling devices. others faced related charges. Trials are set for about June 9.
E W Bauman a Cedar Rapids electrician faced a fish and game charge after trout fishing at Backbone state park before dawn on May 1. He was fined 10 dollars and 14 dollars 65 cents in costs totaling 24 dollars 65 cents equal to 1.23 dollars per minute for twenty minutes before five. His companions were cleared.
Des Moines Iowa January 1947 Miss Jean Houstman a Mount Vernon high school student won the statewide editorial contest tied to Poppy Day announced by Mrs M Myrton Shelley Des Moines Poppy Day chairman. Houstman receives the auxiliary traveling trophy to keep for one year. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs O J Houstman. Poppy sales are scheduled for Saturday.
A large crowd gathered in Shueyville on Wednesday evening for an alumni banquet honoring the class of 1941 and celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first graduating class of 1891. Notable attendees included Mrs. Ruia Harless, J. R. Bowersox, Delia Sheih, Inez Witousek, Joseph Novotny, Supt. O. J. Rhodes, Lou Buresh, and F. J. Snider with music by Leonard Reyman.
The North Liberty Methodist church marks a centennial with a four day program led by Bishop J. Ralph Magee of Des Moines. Homecoming picnic follows a 10:45 a.m. service. The event features sermons by Rev. Lloyd Tennant and Rev. A. M. Worrell, with Dr. Wade Crawford Barclay delivering the closing address. The celebration recalls the church’s 1898 dedication and 1855 origins, noting two prior churches and 19 living members from the original 1900s era.
Des Moines AP Karl W Fischer Iowa Public Safety Commissioner says Missouri violated a reciprocity pact by selling licenses to Iowa men working on Fort Leonard Wood in Rolla. He expects to aid several hundred Iowa workers who kept Iowa residence and were charged Missouri fees. Fischer cites talks with Missouri officials and urges affected motorists to report to his office.
A Waterloo delegation from the play ground and recreation commission viewed Cedar Rapids park improvement drawings at City Hall on Friday. The group, led by Ed Moore Jr and including John Koch, Mrs. Leo Leeper, and Don Wordell, noted Waterloo’s similar projects. Accompanying members from civic groups were Mrs. Andrew Petersen, Mrs. Oscar Anderson, Mrs.Robert Lubbock, and Nevin Ni recreation. Architect plans are shown in the Memorial Coliseum until Saturday.
About 12 to 15 Piper Cub planes will land at Cedar Rapids airport Saturday at 11 15 a m for a goodwill flight promoting I Wanted Wings a Paramount picture will screen at the Paramount theater starting Memorial Day. The planes travel from Des Moines to Cedar Rapids then proceed to Iowa City meeting Hal Sheridan Paramount manager who will receive the film.
Mrs. Oscar H. Lundquist announces Cedar Rapids schools winners in the Poppy Poster contest. Senior division first prize goes to Maxine Charipar, second to Carolyn Solbrig, third to Vera Pyle, with honorable mention Betty Jean Dahl. Junior division winners are Jerry Cimburek, Earl Dennis, Mary Bergen. Cash prizes $3 $2 $1. Posters display in downtown stores and the event aligns with Poppy Day observed Saturday.

Dr. Paul C. Greene acting head of Coe College psychology department attends a drivers training seminar at Iowa State College this week. He will offer a summer drivers training course at Coe for high school teachers to qualify them to teach in schools.
Mrs. Alfred Ramos reports a purse stolen from a table at her home on Fourteenth Avenue SE between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday. The purse held about $4 in cash and an endorsed check dated in 1930, made payable to her late father and never cashed.
Rep. Elmer Johnson of Cedar Rapids will deliver Memorial Day remarks at the Iowa Soldiers Home in Marshalltown on May 30. The program begins at 8:30 a.m. from the platform near the headquarters building, with a fallback to the assembly hall if weather requires.
A. L. Taylor, executive secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, spoke to Mechanicsville High School seniors on Thursday night on what young people need today for success in business. About 450 people attended as a girls chorus and an eighth grade chorus sang.
Twenty residents urged the city council to act on nuisance allegations from ongoing operations of the Henderson School of Welding at 825 Fifth Avenue SE. The issue was sent to the public safety department for action.
Police report two cars stolen Friday morning. H. J Wiley found his panel truck missing from Third avenue E between Fourth and Fifth streets after parking about 9 m. Friday. he recovered it at 10 a.m. Harry Kesser said his car was stolen from a trailer camp at 2325 Johnson avenue around 10 p.m. Thursday.
The playground and recreation commission organizes a Saturday hike for children 8 and older in the northeast city section. They meet at Daniels park at 9 a.m. travel to Indian Creek and return by 3 p.m. Each child brings lunch and may cook over an open fire. WPA leaders supervising include Mrs. Nettie Rosenberg Norman Reid and Charles Filling.
Dr Erik M Eriksson 45 former head of Coe College history department and longtime USC professor collapsed while lecturing and died in Pasadena California Services will be held there He chaired Coe 1925 to 1929 authored several books taught at Lombard ISU Iowa State Teachers College and University of Iowa where he earned a PhD in 1922 He wrote widely for magazines and newspapers and served in the army reserve prior to his death in California.
S. R. Hankins general secretary of the YMCA warned the Council of Social Agencies at their Friday luncheon that agencies will face tougher times and higher expectations with funding pressures and potential cuts likely before fall. He cited earlier strains and projected fewer resources even as demand rises.
The council elected new officers including Rev. W. A. Jacobs as president, Mrs Alice R. Kirwin as vice president, and Lucy Simpson as secretary treasurer. The group aims to boost community programs and mutual aid as costs rise and wages struggle.
In police court Judge Harry S. Johnson found Robert Hennessey not guilty of reckless driving after a collision with W. L. Crissman at Third Avenue and Fifteenth Street SE. Prosecution failed to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Hennessey said the steering wheel came off as he tried to avoid the crash. Hennessey still faced a possible charge of operating a motor vehicle without a driver's license in a separate case.
Upper Iowa University in Fayette announces a full week of events from May 27 to June 2. Dr. John Lewi Gillin of the University of Wisconsin will deliver the commencement address at 10 30 a m. Activities include reunions for classes 1891 and 1916, senior dinners, violin and music recitals, the senior class play Sun Up, an alumni meeting, and a vesper concert by the Upper Iowa singers after the baccalaureate service on June 1.
