Iowa Grants Expanding Summer Meal Sites Across State
The governor’s office expects to award three year grants this week, with 44 total applications seeking about 1.5 million dollars. Priority goes to new meal sites in areas with high free meal eligibility and to districts not already in federal programs, aiming to widen access for low income Iowa students.

Iowa Seeks grants to expand summer meal sites across state
Forty three grant applications from school districts seek funding under the Iowa Summer Meal Program Expansion Grant to replace a federal program. Cedar Rapids asks for 20000 to run three sites. Ottumwa requests nearly 25 million over three years for five sites. Vinton Shellsburg seeks about 195000 for one site. Most grants fall between 5000 and 30000. The effort backs the Summer Food Service and Seamless Summer Option programs with local partners. Luke Elzinga notes 2023 summer participation averaged 21557, far below potential. He urges grant use to increase access while acknowledging the governor’s rejection of 29 million in federal funds.
