Cisterns Bring Rainwater Use To Iowa Home
Rural Iowa couple Jim and Mary Schirmer rely on a concrete cistern built into their new Anamosa house to supply most household needs. The 7 500 gallon tank fills from a 1 inch rain and is treated with monthly bleach to control bacteria. They use well water only for potable needs and report saving under 3 gallons of well water daily. The story notes historical use of cisterns, potential pitfalls, and professional cautions from Iowa State University experts.
