Roundup Warns of Ames Cutworms in Iowa Cornfields
Iowa growers report dingy cutworms in newly planted corn across much of the state. ISU entomologist Harold Stockdale says larvae about half to three quarters of an inch resemble black cutworms. Cold weather delays black cutworm moth flights, so damage likely after May 21. Dingy cutworms cut plants at or below the soil surface, especially in weedy fields or where residue remains from last year. Control mirrors black cutworm methods.

Meat plan would hurt farmers in long run
A proposed USDA plan to salvage untrimmed meat from carcasses through mechanical deboning could cut consumer prices by up to 28 cents per pound if used in up to 20 percent of processed meats, but would lower livestock producers’ revenues by about 1.1 billion annually. The study notes net societal gains of 1.7 billion a year, with consumers benefiting while farmers lose.

Iowa Eyes Regaining Nation's Corn Title This Year
Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bob Lounsberry says Iowa may reclaim the top corn production spot from Illinois. Delays in southern Illinois spring field work, plus Iowa farmers planting about 2 million more acres, could boost Iowa’s ranking despite recent slips. Northern Iowa progress and weather effects at tasseling also shape outcomes.
