Shiites protest flags outside mosques in Iraq conflict
Thousands of Shiites stomped on American and Israeli flags painted on roads near mosques in Najaf and other cities amid calls by anti U S cleric Muqtada al Sadr for a stand against U S forces. Sunni leaders called for three days of closing places of worship to protest sectarian violence. An American soldier was killed north of Baghdad in a roadside bombing bringing total U S deaths to 1628.

Insider account says Rumsfeld clashed with planners over Iraq war plans
Gregory Hooker, CENTCOM's senior intelligence analyst for Iraq, argues in a Washington Institute study that top Defense Department pressure for rapid, small-force war planning, leaks of classified plans, and neglect of postwar strategy hampered Iraq invasion prep. He notes civilian input injected unrealistic ideas and that postwar planning remained fragmented and under a unified command.

Female veteran seeks to strike women in combat provision
Rep. Heather Wilson the only female veteran in Congress will push to remove a defense bill provision that would codify the 1994 Pentagon policy banning women from direct ground combat units below brigade level. She says it is unnecessary and unhelpful and is working with Democrats on an amendment. The House will vote on a 442 billion dollar bill setting Defense Department policy and spending. The provision would require congressional approval to open more jobs to women in direct ground combat. Supporters say it preserves current openings such as combat support units.
