Many events set for band festival in Cedar Rapids

The fifteenth annual Eastern Iowa Band Festival features afternoon performances by 60 bands on First Second and Third Avenues with Gov Norman Erbe as parade marshal. A night jazz concert with George Shearing and Jack Teagarden sold briskly, tickets sold in advance only.

Taxes Drop In 22 Lucky Iowa Towns

A Des Moines report shows property tax millages rose in most of 128 Iowa cities surveyed by the Iowa Taxpayers Assn. Only 22 towns lowered levies, with large gains to fund schools and municipal services. Urbandale tops at 129.718 mills. Ames, Madrid, Independence, Des Moines follow among the highest.

College School Bond Vote Set

Residents of College community district will vote on a 300000 elementary school building bond in a special election on June 6. Polls open 12 to 7 pm at four precincts in Monroe Jefferson townships Johnson Linn counties and at Prairie high school for College township.

Speeding arrests jump 28 percent this year in Iowa

Iowa Highway Patrol reports a 28 percent rise in speeding arrests to 5,967 drivers this year led by 3,835 nighttime violations. Patrol Chief David Herrick notes 1,071 of those arrested were truck drivers. Court summonses total 14,488, up from 13,582 last year.

Kalona Adopts Fast Time Along With Area Towns

Kalona city council voted to observe Daylight Saving time starting May 28, aligning with Washington. Nearby towns West Liberty begin June 4, while Iowa City keeps standard time until June 11. Coralville Tiffin and Riverside are expected to follow Iowa City.

Mt Vernon survey to rate local business and living

Residents and businesses in Mt. Vernon Iowa will participate in a three phase economic survey conducted by the University of Iowa Bureau of Business and Economic Research for the Mt. Vernon Chamber of Commerce. The first phase mails questionnaires to 10 percent of area families to assess purchasing patterns and local shopping areas.

Iowa City Rate Suit Opens Monday In Johnson County

A civil trial in Johnson county district court over utility rates for Iowa City and Iowa-Illinois Gas & Electric Co. begins Monday.
