Dorm rate hikes become largest in over a decade
Iowa public universities approve their biggest residence hall rate increases in more than ten years. Iowa State University will raise its most popular double room and meal plan by 6 percent, the University of Iowa by 5 percent, and UNI by 3.5 percent for the upcoming fall. University officials cite inflation, utilities, wages, and nondurable goods as reasons, and say the boosts are needed to maintain service quality amid staffing struggles.

New field test to stop white oak decline in Iowa
Foresters in Iowa embrace a rapid DNA test kit inspired by COVID-19 to detect the oak decline fungus in white oaks. The Minnesota startup kit promises about half the cost of lab tests and could guide replanting decisions as dead trees mount. Tivon Feeley of the Iowa DNR notes the tool will help determine whether to replant or switch species. Since 2010, Midwest white oaks have suffered severe die offs, with Tim Krauss of Amana noting two to three trees die per acre and the need to harvest dead wood before it loses value.
