Gov Kim Reynolds signed a law regulating automated traffic enforcement cameras in Iowa Cedar Rapids and Des Moines. Local governments must obtain a state permit via the Department of Transportation and show safety impact before placing or continuing camera use, with limits on ticket revenue use.
The governor signs hemp and charter school measures as GA passes House File 2681 with broad bipartisan backing. In the Senate the bill cleared 46 to 1 and 85 to 12 in the House, establishing a strict framework to justify camera use by authorities amid Iowa traffic fatality concerns. Senator Mike Klimesh noted his long mayoral tenure in Spillville during the Senate debate.
Cedar Rapids will begin an $8.04 million flood protection segment in the Northwest Neighborhood this summer using federal COVID relief funds. The project installs an earthen levee at Ellis Lane NW and will realign Ellis Boulevard NW over the levee as part of the city’s $750 million permanent flood control system to shield Cedar River flood risks.
The House passed the Maternal and Child Health Stillbirth Prevention Act of 2023 by 408 to 3 to allow use of existing federal grant funds for stillbirth prevention and research. Senators Merkley and Cassidy previously introduced a companion measure. The bill supports awareness, fetal movement tracking, smoking cessation, and reducing congenital syphilis.
