Cedar Rapids observance features air force planes on parade

Volunteers and families gathered at the Cedar Rapids airport to view two Air Force planes, a T-38 jet trainer and a B-25 bomber, flown from Offutt Air Force Base. Lt. Col. James Connell guided visitors through the cockpit as spectators crowded to inspect the jets and meet the crews.

VFW Chief Criticizes Japan Over Soldier Case

VFW commander Cooper Volt of Chattanooga denounces Japan for demanding surrender of an American serviceman. The dispute centers on 22 year old William Girard from Ottawa LaSalle Illinois, accused in a fatal shooting at a military firing range where a Japanese woman collecting scrap died. Japan argues he was resting off duty. U.S. officials say jurisdiction was waived and call for review.

Elvis Records Prompts Police Rush in Cedar Rapids

In Cedar Rapids on a Saturday night at 9:30 pm police rushed to a residence on Oliver Sauce Lane after neighbors heard eight women screaming. They found a 14 year old entertaining a group of friends while playing Elvis records. one girl panicked and ran, authorities said.

Bandits Loot Cleveland Store in Night Break-In

Four masked bandits attacked a Cleveland department store Saturday, surprised the manager and four employees, and fled with between 50 000 and 60 000 dollars. They entered by cutting a ceiling hole, lowered 20 feet with a rope, then seized firearms from the sporting goods section and escaped. The manager, Irving Mills, 43, and staff were restrained as the robbers, two armed with .45 pistols, improvised their escape.

National military academy for women proposed

Mrs Willis Vanderburg of Shell Rock state legislative chairwoman will be supported by the state federation to appoint a legislative quorum and the position of chairman. Vera Norman Pedersen of Sioux City North Control region vice-chairman will seek candidacy for the regional chairman post in the executive committee.

St Luke's 1959 Class To Receive School Caps Today

Members of the class of 1969 of St Luke's hospital school of nursing will receive caps this afternoon in a ceremony at St Paul's Methodist church. The program begins at 4 p.m. Speakers include Dr Ben Wolverton hospital superintendent Louis Blair and Barbara Janniker. A reception follows. The class includes numerous members from Cedar Rapids Waterloo Manchester Dubuque Clinton Sigourney and other towns, with many names listed as part of the graduates.

Pope XII Names Stefan Wyszynski Cardinal in Rome

Assessment Appeals Deadline Set for Monday in Cedar Rapids

Cedar Rapids board of review will meet at 2 pm in city hall to hear appeals from 1857 assessed valuations. City Assessor W W Rulish said after the May deadline board members will be kept busy reviewing three appeals with spending and review sessions. Last week's meetings yielded no new formal appeals and three inquiries did not file follow-up forms for official action.

Trio jailed after two liquor store break ins

Cedar Rapids police arrested three youths two of them 15 for breaking into a south side liquor store twice Saturday night. They carried out bottles then fled to Labren drive where the car stalled. Five more bottles were recovered from a garage loft and tied to service station thefts Friday night.

Discarded Cigaret Ignites False Fire Alarm

A carelessly discarded cigar et dropped into a cold air duct at the May drug store on Second Street SE late Saturday triggered a fire alarm. A bystander named Plremen said he collected the cigarette from the duct. There was some smoke but no damage.
