Cedar Rapids to Build Flood Ready Amphitheater on West Cedar River
After a decade and four mayors and a major flood talk, Cedar Rapids starts constructing an outdoor amphitheater on the west bank of the Cedar River as part of a new flood protection system. Work begins after Freedom Festival ends with first steps rerouting a sanitary sewer and realigning a stormwater line. By late July dump trucks and earthmovers will form a sloped lawn rising to 13 feet, using 41 000 cubic yards of dirt. The levee portion should finish this fall, enabling full protection with the remainder of the flood program. An open house at the African American Museum of Iowa and Library invites public review of plans.

Mississippi river reopens after brief closure near Natchez
The Coast Guard reopened the swollen Mississippi River north of New Orleans allowing cargo vessels to pass one at a time after a 15 mile Natchez closure halted traffic. A shutdown would have slowed shipments of coal timber iron steel and grain along the nation’s busiest waterway risking hundreds of millions in daily losses.
