Wall Street declines and gains among major indexes

Dollar gains as gold dips on holiday trading
The dollar rose in subdued New York trading as European markets closed for a holiday and gold fell to 320.50 an ounce, down 1.50 from the prior session. Republic National Bank cited the 4 pm bid while dealers attributed the move to short covering in the dollar.
